What affects the cost of solar panels in the UK?

Solar pricing isn't standardised. Two quotes for nominally the same system can sit £3,000 apart, and the reasons are usually a mix of hardware choices, roof complexity and how much margin the installer is building in.

Key things to consider

Roof complexity

Multi-faceted roofs, dormers, awkward access or steep pitches add labour and scaffolding cost. Bungalows are typically cheapest to install on.

Panel quality

Tier-1 panels from established manufacturers (Longi, JA Solar, REC) cost more than budget brands but carry better warranties and degradation curves.

Inverter types

String inverters are cheapest. Hybrid inverters (battery-ready) cost more. Microinverters or optimisers add £600–£1,200 but help on shaded or split roofs.

Scaffolding

Scaffolding alone is £400–£900 depending on access. Bungalows or single-story extensions sometimes avoid it altogether.

Battery add-ons

A 5kWh battery adds £3,500–£5,000. Pre-wiring for a future battery is much cheaper than retrofitting later.

Pros

  • Transparent itemised quotes make true comparison easy
  • Hardware prices have dropped consistently over the last five years
  • Battery-ready hybrid inverters future-proof a system
  • Local installers usually beat national brands on equivalent kit

Cons

  • Inflated 'premium' quotes are common in this market
  • Optimisers and microinverters are often oversold on unshaded roofs
  • Cheap installs may use lower-tier panels or short workmanship cover
  • Finance commission is sometimes baked into the install price

What it actually costs

Typical UK pricing

4kW solar only: £5,500–£8,000. 4kW + 5kWh battery: £9,000–£12,500. 6kW + 10kWh battery: £12,000–£16,000.

FAQs

Is a more expensive quote always better hardware?

No. Always ask for the panel and inverter make/model and compare specs side by side — sometimes the cheaper quote uses identical hardware.

Do I need optimisers?

Only if you have shading or a split-orientation roof. On a clean south-facing roof, optimisers usually don't justify the cost.

What's a fair installer margin?

Typically 15–25%. Margins above that are usually marketing overheads or commission-driven sales, not better service.
